Online
Learning is derived from the larger category, distance learning.
Distance learning began in the 18th century when lessons were sent to
students through the mail. With the invention of the radio at the end of
the 19th century came lessons offered through the radio. Penn State University in Pennsylvania was one of the first higher education institutions to provide course offerings through a radio broadcast. Following
this, in the mid-1900's educational programs were offered via telephone
and then broadcast on television. The University of Houston was one of the first universities to offer a televised course in 1953.
After
the creation of the Internet in 1969, this became the primary mode of
learning in distance education classes. The University of Phoenix was
established in 1976 and was one of the first institutions committed to
providing distance learning options for individuals pursuing a higher
education degree. Today more than 96% of colleges and universities offer
online learning options and this number is expected to increase.
